Acorn drop offs located outside of Floyd for 2026 collection
This year, acorns cannot be dropped off locally in Floyd. The VDF has moved away from local office drops offs because of logistics.
Every year the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDF) sells thousands of seedlings throughout Virginia thanks to the efforts and donations of local community members who collect acorns for the cause.
VDF has been providing this service to landowners in the Commonwealth for more than 100 years, according to the department's website, which goes on to explain: "When you put your money in the ground in the form of seedlings, you need to start with the best stock available and that means stock suited for Virginia soils and climate. The cultural practices that we use in growing seedlings are based on more than 60 years of research and experience in quality production."
We offer locally sourced, insect and rot resistant hemlock, and lots of other species for just about any project.
We also can provide firewood, kindling, mulch, sawdust, and shavings.
Inside we produce paneling and flooring in various, often rustic local woods.

VDF is currently collecting acorns for the 2026 season. The shop is set to open in October.
Nicholas Smith of VDF explained that they are looking to collect many species of oak and black walnut this year. "The oak species of high importance are black oak, chestnut oak, and white oak," he said, noting that the full list of acceptable species can be found online at www.dof.virginia.gov.
When collecting, Smith said, community members should make sure "the nuts are in a bag made of breathable material (like paper or burlap). Make sure to label the bag with the species inside. Keep each different species in a separate bag. If possible, keep nuts in a cool area after collecting." He said they should not be stored in the freezer prior to drop off, and they should be delivered to drop off locations by Oct. 11.

- Blacksburg Community Center at 725 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg
Virginia Department of Forestry nurseries accept orders of tree seedlings from early October until late April with pickup and shipping during Virginia’s planting season, which runs from late February to late April.
