This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Artemis Journal — a remarkable milestone for a small, independent publication born in the rural, conservative southwest corner of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Against all odds, Artemis has not only survived, but thrived. Throughout the years, it has become a vibrant hub of creative energy whose influence extends far beyond its original borders.

The theme for 2026 — “Origins” — reflects the publication’s dedication to blending art and poetry while continuing to publish emerging writers and artists alongside renowned contributors such as Nikki Giovanni, Virginia Poet Laureate Ron Smith, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, and acclaimed artists Betty Branch and Steven Kenny.

For four decades, Artemis has showcased compelling new voices — ranging from Poet Laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners to first-time writers and artists. The journal’s rich history has been integral to its ongoing success and resilience.

Artemis was born out of a 1977 workshop for survivors of domestic violence. As its leadership looks to the future, the women and men who contribute to Artemis will continue to speak in the most powerful, universal, and deeply human languages. Through art, the writers who are selected for the journal hold up a mirror to see ourselves in others and their struggles — recognizing our shared need to connect, love, create, and endure.

In celebration of Artemis Journal’s 50th anniversary, the 2026 Artemis Launch will take place on Sept. 4 at the Roanoke Taubman Museum of Art (110 Salem Ave. SE). The event will showcase our distinguished guest speakers: U.S. Poet Laureate and author Arthur Sze, along with acclaimed artist Michele Oka Doner. Artemis Journal 2026 “Origins” will also be unveiled at the event, marking this milestone as truly exceptional.

Artemis has advocated for social justice since 1977. It dedicates 10% of its journal sales to a women’s shelter supporting abused women and their families in Southwest Virginia. Learn more at www.artemisjournal.org.
