Curriculum Corner: ‘Exploring careers and expanding horizons’

This week in “Get a Life,” we all decided on careers. This really flexed our research muscles. We had a worksheet to help us decide on a career, having us reflect on our skills and interests, and then looked into what careers applied.

This week in the Ruby Class, we were glad to get some time in the warm sun together. We started our daily morning writing practice with some Ekphrasis, Micro Memoir exercises, and had a flash fiction section for our Rubies to work on throughout the week.

We also continued our exploration of “The Golden Compass.” We are approaching the halfway point of the novel, and things are getting very interesting. The Rubies worked to create Venn diagrams comparing two very different societies in the book and did some short response writing on what qualities make our protagonist a leader.

This week in “Get a Life,” we all decided on careers. This really flexed our research muscles. We had a worksheet to help us decide on a career, having us reflect on our skills and interests, and then looked into what careers applied. We also researched the working conditions of our chosen careers. What are the average hours? What kind of education and/or training does it require? What is the starting salary, and what is the advanced salary? It was a great opportunity to remind ourselves how to look for reliable sources. It also highlighted all of the interesting, fun things our friends want to do with their lives one day.

The Rubies were introduced to the following weather tools during science: thermometer, hygrometer, barometer, rain gauge, and anemometer. We added notes to our interactive notebooks and headed outside to put our weather tools to use. The students will collect weather data for the next week. After data is collected, we will observe patterns within the data and the correlation to the weather conditions. This will segue nicely into our lessons on fronts and forecasting over the next few weeks.

Speaking of a nice segue — the National Weather Service outing was fantastic. The staff could not have been more kind and accommodating. First, they gave us a tour of the offices and command center. There our guide showed us examples of the devices used to collect weather data, explained their radar system located in Check, and described the purpose of each of the stations in their command center.

We then walked across the street to help prepare the afternoon weather balloon. Ask your student how they felt about the feel of the balloon. The staff cracked up when one student exclaimed, "Ew, it feels like skin!"

The teaching team is continually impressed and amazed by the level of respect and responsibility the Rubies have shown on our outings.

In case you missed it in last week's newsletter, we have a big trip planned — we are visiting the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton with the Copper Class. We were awarded a grant to cover the full cost of student admission, our educational programming, and a ride. A charter bus will transport both classes, teachers, and chaperones.
