Harris Street developers announce purchase of The Station
Developers released new details Thursday about a venue for dining, shopping, and apartments that they plan to build in downtown Floyd.
The proposal would transform three deteriorated buildings along Harris Street into a commercial hub with terraces for outdoor dining and pedestrian walkways. Several Harris family businesses including a dry cleaners, shoe repair center, car wash, and laundromat operated in the buildings over the years, but the spaces eventually became vacant. The developers, operating as Harris Street Development LLC, bought the real estate from the Town of Floyd last year for nearly $550,000.
When completed, the Harris Street development will be similar to The Station, the cluster of 10 shops and offices, and nine second-floor apartments at 203 S. Locust St., project officials said.
Harrison Schroeder, one of four partners on the project, said crews could possibly break ground this year, but a final decision has not been made.The group hopes to complete the project in one to two years, he said.
“We certainly want to get it done as soon as possible,” he said Thursday.

The other members of the development group are Shane Edgell, owner of EdgellBIM; John Mathis, owner of Mathis Community Living; and Ryan Baker, owner of Baker Cattle Co. Schroeder owns the Schroeder Law Firm.
As the group shared new details of what they plan to do on Harris Street, it also announced its purchase of The Station and adjacent market pavilion in May for $2.3 million.
The sellers were members of Floyd Village Square LLC, made up of Woody Crenshaw, Jacqueline Crenshaw, Silvie Granatelli, Kathleen Ingoldsby, Susan Icove, Don Nathan, and Ed Erwin.
The development group’s mission is “to obtain, own, and operate various keystone commercial properties around Floyd that will help preserve the special small town charm that we all love. The goal for our group is to keep Floyd properties in Floyd hands,” Edgell said in a release.

Connie Mitchell, daughter of longtime Harris Street business operator Vernon Harris, praised the proposal to renovate her dad’s former property. She viewed the site plan for the first time a few days ago.
“From what I saw, I think it looked good. I think daddy would be really pleased to have something that is nice and positive and forward-looking for the town and for the county,” she said.
One question mark over the project concerns a stone sculpture of a face looking out from the property toward West Main Street. Installed during the era when the Green Man Inn operated at the address, it does not appear to be in the way of what the developers wish to do, Schroeder said. But the development group has not decided whether it will have a place in the final project, he said.
“We hate to destroy art,” Schroeder said. “We would invite any input that the community has.”
