Dogtown Roadhouse summoned all the Deadheads, witches, and things that whistle in the night for an Appalachian Cryptid Dead in the Holler Halloween party. Witches mingled with wizards, while angels and devils made appearances.

Rosebud’s core band members — Ryan Thaw on bass, William Hairston on guitar, Colin Cospel on guitar, Blaine Kaiser on drums, and Will Tillery on keyboards — played a popular collection of mostly Grateful Dead covers as dancers happily filled the floor in front of the stage on Oct. 31.

DJ Spaceboy played between sets, highlighting spooky favorites like “Ghostbusters” and “Thriller.” His partner, Susan Saunders, emceed the costume contest, which featured a $50 Dogtown gift certificate for the top prize and $25 each for two other categories. Costume winners across three categories included Best Cryptid (creatures not proven to be real, but could be), which went to an antlered Wendigo, a malevolent, cannibalistic monster from the folklore of Algonquian-speaking Indigenous peoples.

Chosen by audience applause, the team costume win went to the Tillery family dressed as The Addams Family, featuring Cousin Itt, Morticia, and Wednesday, who sported Thing on her shoulder. The prize for an individual costume came down to three participants: Cruella de Vil; Rockarina, a tattooed, long-haired man in a bright yellow tutu; and a mustard-laden hot dog, with the final nod going to Rockarina.

The celebration was a family affair, with children dancing and participating in the costume contest. A complimentary photo booth drew attendees throughout the night.
