Floyd judge hands down life sentence for the sexual assault of a minor
The case was investigated by Investigator Rusty Stanley of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office after the victim disclosed the abuse to a school counselor.
On June 2, Floyd County Circuit Court sentenced Kalynda Marie Rogers to life in the Virginia Department of Corrections for the sexual assault of an 11-year-old Floyd County child in 2018.
Rogers was a registered sex offender at the time of the offense, having previously been convicted in Alleghany County for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old. Following her release from incarceration, Rogers moved to Floyd County where she was indicted by a grand jury in 2022.
The case was investigated by Investigator Rusty Stanley of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office after the victim disclosed the abuse to a school counselor.
When interviewed by Investigator Stanley, Rogers, who was approximately 23 years old at the time of the incident, confessed and claimed the child initiated the contact — a claim she repeated at the sentencing, according to Floyd County Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Branscom.
Following testimony regarding the profound impact of the crime on the victim and the victim’s family, the Court agreed with the Commonwealth that Rogers posed a continuing danger to children and imposed a life sentence.
