'Let Love Grow' at the Seed Swap
Local gardeners are known to enthusiastically bring everything from gardening tools, extra pots, soil, and bags of fertilizer, as well as gardening books and magazines, to seed swaps.
This past Saturday and Sunday local gardeners, both green and experienced, gathered at the new pavilion at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library for the "Let Love Grow" Community Seed Swap.
Seeds and plant exchanges happen at many locations throughout the year in Floyd and the surrounding areas. Local gardeners are known to enthusiastically bring everything from gardening tools, extra pots, soil, and bags of fertilizer, as well as gardening books and magazines.
Branch Assistant Manager Lisa Thompson said the library hosts a seed and plant exchange on average four times a year. She explained, "This event is a partnership between the library, Partnership For Floyd, and the Virginia Master Naturalists. We have just had members of the community that are bringing various houseplants, seeds, pots, anything that can be used for outside.” Thompson noted that attendees “also bring lovely food, and it's a real community gathering...”

Normally there is no rule about what you have to bring to seed and plant swaps. Jane Cundiff of Partnership for Floyd and the Floyd Wild Garden Club said, "It's so awesome that people bring stuff — tons of stuff — but they don't even have to bring anything [to participate] because there's so much here that people have brought already.” New gardeners are encouraged to join these events as a way to get into the hobby with little to no money invested just by gathering the needed supplies.
Thompson said that she enjoys having the library host a seed and plant swap “in the beginning of spring when we all have that itch to go out and dig in the ground and plant things and watch them grow.” The community seed swaps later in the year tend to include more houseplants.
The "Let Love Grow" swap on Saturday (March 21) had more than 150 attendees, Thompson said. She added that it was "definitely the largest event program we've had on the pavilion" since it opened to patrons in October. This was also the first year that Partnership for Floyd took over planning the spring swap.

Cundiff explained, "We can help the community a little bit more by actually buying some seeds, so we bought a bunch of seeds, and we got it all together. We got some snacks together, and then we also have good connections in the community to send out the message... This works great for everybody.” She noted that Partnership for Floyd's next seed swap will be at Warren G. Lineberry Park on April 18.
