Offerings for Every Angler: New River Fly Fishing

Did you know that there is world-class fly-fishing right here in Southwest Virginia? The exceptional fly-fishing opportunities found in our own backyards range from wild trout in local creeks and the Smith River to smallmouth bass and other game species in the New River and its tributaries.

The New River is one of the premier smallmouth bass rivers in the country. The Virginia state record was caught on the New and weighed over eight pounds. The New River is also an excellent walleye and muskie fishery with a robust population of naturally reproducing fish. The current state records for these fish were also caught in the New River. It has several features (ledges, rapids, boulder, grass beds, etc.) that provide a variety of fish habitats. You can expect to see beautiful scenery, like bluffs and rock outcroppings, as well as wildlife such as deer, black bear, osprey, and bald eagles when fishing on one of the oldest rivers in the world. Because of the medium size and depth as it flows through Virginia, the New River is especially conducive to fly-fishing.
