REVIEW: 'A Homecoming at Gather'

It was a true homecoming, a familiar place with familiar faces, and it had all the energy of an important and necessary gathering. The event was to raise money for the independent, people-driven Floyd Times and it was held at the soon-to-be-open-to-the-public Gather restaurant, located above the Harvest Moon. This is where the familiar occurred, but what took place was so much more.

Stepping into the restaurant there was an exciting buzz, similar to going to a concert, lots of chatter, anticipation, and joy. What was funny was that I thought I was going to one of the Floyd Democrats’ meetings, but I was soon informed otherwise and was happy to participate in supporting this project.

After folks had been talking and sharing for a while, appetizers were brought out. The food is where the magic happened, and this is what I want to focus on:

The spread was delightful and a well presented table set for us. When I took my first bite of hummus I knew there was going to be a uniqueness to this feast. Humble hummus taken to a new level and that wasn’t the only dish that accomplished a gustatory explosion but also the chicken salad! Now I’ve had many a “chicken salad” and some have been great but this one was superb. Again, I appreciated that the chefs took a common food and elevated it to a taste euphoria, a savory sensation. The mouthwatering extravaganza continued.

Having finished some appetizers and having drunk a refreshing, flavorful drink I was headed up to pay my bill for the alcoholic beverage when the wait staff said, "Aren’t you staying for dinner?" Totally surprised I replied, "wasn’t THAT dinner!?" Adrianne (Davis, one of the owners of Gather) was there and said that the dinner was lemongrass chicken with a side of rice. Now I couldn’t pass that up even though I knew I’d take most of it home.

Finally the main arrives and it’s plated with the chicken, rice and salad. My first bite of the salad was a tasty delight, then the chicken, it was all a yum fest, and gastronomic bliss for my taste buds. The whole food experience was an epicurean delight, a mouthwatering extravaganza, a palate party and I could go on.

But as great as the food was what was going on behind the scenes, in the kitchen, on the floor, in that room of “gathering” was the sacred experience of community, service, love, and joy in creating for others so we could have a glimpse of fellowship when we serve, receive, and express gratitude for life and others.

Gather will be an elevated place where we can feel the love of those who give themselves in the service of others by creating mouthwatering food but also a place of communion and solidarity for the wonderful simple joys of life and each other.
