Buffalo Mountain Brewery and McDaniel’s Tavern celebrates eight years

“I’m so happy to be here, happy that this place has become a place where people come and hang-out. Floyd is a great community. I’m happy to just be a part of it,” brewmaster McDaniel said.

The public invitation to join in the celebration of Buffalo Mountain Brewery and McDaniel’s Tavern's eighth anniversary on Saturday promised “The Beer Is Chilled. The Music is Ready. The Sun is Shining.”

The free event featured the Brewery’s traditional Keg Toss, led by brewmaster/brewery owner Bill (Bryant) McDaniel; corn hole games; free face painting; food trucks and a top-notch musical line-up that included Luke King, Buffalo Mountain Drifters, Rock Castle Gorgeous, Dan Fox, and the Holler Hooligans.

Seventeen-year-old Luke King, who lives in Roanoke with his family, opened the music lineup, playing mostly original songs. Introducing his song “I Saw the Light,” he said, “This is my grandma’s favorite.” His grandmother was in the audience, along with his aunt, his mother, and his father, who was born and raised in Floyd. Brett Rader accompanied King on percussion.

Craft beers made on site with names like Ape-Ri-Co-Shus (Belgium Apricot Blonde), Festivus for the Resivus (German Lager), Lucky Charm (Irish Stout), Copperhead (IPA), Short ‘n Sweet (Raspberry Chocolate Porter) and more, were enjoyed by all. The festivities took place primarily outside. Attendees spread out blankets, sat at picnic tables under, and some even brought their own table and chairs and made themselves at home.

“I’m so happy to be here, happy that this place has become a place where people come and hang-out. Floyd is a great community. I’m happy to just be a part of it,” brewmaster McDaniel said.

A large crowd gathered to watch the Keg Toss. Josh Obenhaus made the best throw of the day in the men’s competition. Lisa Kerrinckx, who was visiting from France, won the woman’s toss. In the 10-and-under age bracket, Dezmond Helm-Witcher (who McDaniel dubbed the Keg Toss King) took first place and McDaniel’s niece Rylan Dalton won the girls’ competition.

Culinary favorites from the Turner Family Farm’s Vittles Wagon and desserts from Nana’s Sweets & Treats food truck were enjoyed and went well with the Brewery’s artisan brews.
