Countdown to Giving Day: Nonprofits gear up for next week's main event

Floyd organizations are leading the GiveLocalNRV 2026 Early Giving Leaderboard ahead of Giving Day, which will be held from noon on Wednesday, June 24, to noon on Thursday, June 25.

The official Giving Day brings with it opportunities to earn prizes and have donations matched during six Power Hours ($500, all donations) and 10 Golden Ticket Prizes ($250, online only).

As of Tuesday, June 16, Springhouse had raised $76,023 and Plenty! Farm and Food Bank had raised $51,135; both are working toward goals of $120,000.

Handmade Music School had raised $17,575 and Floyd Center for the Arts had raised $13,833 of their $40,000 goals, respectively.

Thursday, June 18

Literacy NRV's Dream Builder Open Mic Night at 6:30 p.m. — Join Literacy NRV for an open mic night at the Book House in Floyd (132 N. Locust St. in Floyd. Share your original poems, stories, writings, songs, and more. Pay what you can admission. Votes for the best performance will equal one vote per dollar, with a matching donation of $2,000. The most votes will receive a prize.

Saturday, June 20

Calfee's Together We Rise Gala from 6-10 p.m. — Join us for “Together We Rise,” an inspiring evening in support of the Calfee Community and Cultural Center. This special gala will feature a catered dinner, dancing, and music by DJ Spin Doctor, along with drinks and an exciting silent auction. Guests will gather to celebrate community, culture, and opportunity while raising vital funds to support the Harmon Learning Center and the African American Heritage Center — helping us continue to educate, preserve history, and uplift future generations. Learn more and get tickets here

GIVING DAY, JUNE 24-25

Wednesday, June 24

Christiansburg Institute's Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Freedom's Classroom Program at 6 p.m. — Come explore the legacy of Christiansburg Institute, learn more about our mission, and discover ways to get involved in preserving and sharing this important history. Food trucks will be on-site throughout the day, including Shelly's Island Cuisine and The Wiggly Pig! Then join us later that evening for Freedom's Classroom, a special program celebrating Juneteenth through education, history, and community in Southwest Virginia. Learn more via this Facebook post.

Sustainable Blacksburg's Lunch and Learn — Living sustainably is easier together. Join us to discover local organizations making Blacksburg and the New River Valley greener - and find out how you can get involved. Representatives from each group will share their most impactful projects in fast-paced, 5-minute lightning talks. We will have refreshments and time for mingling starting at 11:45 a.m.  at the Blacksburg Public Library (200 Miller St.).

Montgomery Museum of Art and History Ribbon Cutting and Reception from 4-6 p.m. —  Celebrate the opening of our new lift, which makes all three levels of the museum building accessible, at 4 E. Main St. We are also opening several new exhibits including art quilts from TAVA and a Migration Theme Show that is a companion to our special Montgomery County 250 history exhibit.

Nonprofit Collaboration at Iron Tree Brewery from 5-8 p.m. — Stop by Iron Tree Brewery to cheer on four Giving Day participants and enjoy a fun trivia night! This event is hosted by Downtown Christiansburg, Inc., Inmate Family Assistance of the NRV, Literacy NRV, and NRV CARES. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Details will be posted on Iron Tree's Facebook account here.

Floyd Times' Power Hour — Join us for a public event designed to thank our supporters and drum up further support for Floyd Times and local news during the soft opening of Gather, a new restaurant above Harvest Moon, from 5-6 p.m. on June 24. The event doubles as our Power Hour, meaning that donations made during that time, even as small as $5, count in the competition for cash prizes from the NRV Community Foundation. Park in the back parking lot at 227 N. Locust St., and enter the top level of the building.

Table to Scene Dinner from 5:30-9 p.m. — A joint event between Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation and the Lyric Theatre at 204 Draper Rd. in Blacksburg. Tickets are $40. Check out "Soil to Soul," the museum’s community art show of 17 artists whose work focuses on agrarian and gardening culture, sample food from local restaurants, and then head over to The Lyric Theatre for a screening of Italian Wannabe, a documentary that celebrates the connection between food and community. 

SWVA Wildlife Center Buzz Watch Party from 5:30-7 p.m. — Join SWVA Wildlife Center on June 24 at Big Lick Brewery (409 Salem Ave. in Roanoke) to preview and celebrate our newest BUZZ starring Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center. Meet some of the center’s feathered, furry, and scaly ambassadors starting 5:30 p.m. The show starts at 6 p.m. and will end by 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to all.
