The Special Person Tea is one of the most unique traditions at Blue Mountain School. It gives students the opportunity to host a tea for community members they hold dear. Each classroom works together to craft invitations, menus, decorations, and entertainment for their guests.

The Special Person Tea is a truly an authentic learning experience, weaving together literacy and math skills. Our youngest students write as a group using a method called Language Experience, dictating words while teachers record their answers. Older students craft letters or group invitations to their special people.

Planning refreshments and seating requires a lot of careful thought using spatial awareness skills, estimating, and the occasional testing of recipes. All classrooms work to create an inviting space, and consider their guests interests when planning for the afternoon.

One guest said, "It was a delightful occasion. All the details were creative and thoughtful. I was honored to be invited."

In years past, the tea was held on Valentine’s Day, but with our growing population, classrooms chose to host teas during the spring. Special guests were celebrated with tea, picnics, dance parties and poetry readings.

One guest remembered: "I was invited to my niece's Special Person Tea twelve years ago when she was a preschooler. I had no idea what to expect as I had never heard of such a thing. The young hosts were so happy to have us in their space — they were so excited to show us their classroom. My niece guided me by hand through the space and showed me where her book bag spends the day, her shoes neatly tucked in a corner, the rows of her favorite books, and most importantly her very important schoolmates. Her pride in her school was palpable even then. It is a memory I hope to always have.”

Students agreed:

"I thought it was fun and I liked being with my cousin."

"It was nice to be able to see my cousin during the school day."
