Floyd County Admin takes on Animal Control operations after a decade of it falling under the Sheriff Office's jurisdiction
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, designated deputies, and volunteers have operated Floyd County Animal Control since February 2016, according to County records.
Floyd County officially announced this week that the Administration Department has assumed operations of Animal Control as a part of a reorganizational process designed to enhance service, operational efficiency, and improve coordination with county resources.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, designated deputies, and volunteers have operated Floyd County Animal Control since February 2016, according to County records.
The transfer of Animal Control to County Administration will allow for “increased focus on animal welfare services, community outreach, shelter coordination, ordinance enforcement, and operational planning while maintaining strong collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office and other community agencies when needed,” County officials said in a release on Monday, Aug. 17.

“The County is grateful for the partnership and commitment demonstrated by Sheriff Brian Craig and the members of the Sheriff’s Office,” said County Administrator Kim Chiddo. “Their efforts have helped ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens and animals, and we appreciate their continued support during this transition.”
Chiddo updated the Floyd County Board of Supervisors on the progress of the transition during the Aug. 11 meeting and said that the three new employees at Animal Control spent their first week "meeting the dogs in our care, cleaning and organizing, deep cleaning all the kennels and storage space," and creating "plans to improve" the operation.
The statement released by the County team said that they “look forward to building upon the strong foundation established by the Sheriff’s Office and continuing to serve the community with excellence.”
