While federal/judicial decisions on funding SNAP during the shutdown are changing daily, Floyd County has homegrown resources to help residents who might be in need of food assistance now and in the future.

This week, Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency to allow state funds to be used for the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) program, which will allow for SNAP benefits to be issued in November during the ongoing government shutdown.

Under the VENA program, the Virginia Department of Social Services states, 25% of a resident’s benefits will be issued on a weekly basis, and the day of the week is dependent on when benefits are regularly issued:

  • Residents who are issued their benefits on the first of the month will receive VENA benefits on Mondays
  • Residents who are issued their benefits on the fourth of the month will receive VENA benefits on Wednesdays
  • Residents who are issued their benefits on the seventh of the month will receive VENA benefits on Fridays

VDSS said on Wednesday that “Virginia is the first state in the nation to use state funds to deliver food assistance to SNAP customers.”

While federal/judicial decisions on funding SNAP during the shutdown are changing daily, Floyd County has homegrown resources to help residents who might be in need of food assistance now and in the future.

County Administrator Kim Chiddo said on Friday that Chad Alls, Floyd Director of the Department of Social Services, “has been diligent in remaining up to date” on the situation. She noted that the department has a “local emergency assistance fund that would qualify to help with food disbursements.”

“The Board of Supervisors remain current on all communications, as requested, as this is a priority to safeguard those who rely on SNAP benefits,” Chiddo said. “In addition, our partnerships with community providers, Plenty!, and New River Valley Community Action, are prepared to assist Social Services and provide support.”
