Carroll County law enforcement is searching for a man who shot two deputies during a welfare check last night, killing one and wounding the other.

Carroll County law enforcement is searching for a man who shot two deputies during a welfare check last night, killing one and wounding the other.

According to a statement released early Saturday, the incident began at about 9:26 p.m. on Friday night (May 29). Carroll County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) received a request to conduct a welfare check at a residence on Fancy Gap Highway.

"Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett," CCSO said. "During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire."

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Puckett fled the scene and remains at large at of late Saturday morning. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway. Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous, CCSO said.

Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

As of mid-day Saturday, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting portion of this incident.

Virginia State Police would like to express their condolences to the family of the slain deputy as well as the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

Additionally, the United States Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Michael Puckett.
