Mountain Valor Fest returns to unite local vets

Crooked Mountain Campground will once again be full of music, laughter and community spirit from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, as Mountain Valor Veteran Services hosts the second annual Mountain Valor Fest.

This free, family-friendly festival isn’t your typical “speeches and ceremony” type of event — it’s designed by veterans, for veterans and built around connecting folks with resources while making sure there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

Last year’s inaugural Mountain Valor Fest drew more than 700 community members and 130 veterans.

This year, organizers are aiming even higher: the goal is to reach 500 veterans in attendance while keeping the same welcoming, family-centered atmosphere.

“Last year showed us what Floyd does best — showing up for each other,” said Kathryn Whittenberger, retired Navy Senior Chief and Executive Director of Mountain Valor. “This festival is about veterans, yes — but it’s also about family and community. Whether you come for the music, the goats, the food or the resources, you’re part of it.”

Veteran resources will include on-site support from the VA, Virginia Department of Veterans Services, and trusted local partners to help veterans and families navigate benefits and services.

A Kid Zone hosted by the Floyd Library, the June Bug Center and veteran organization auxiliaries, featuring crafts, games and activities, will keep younger attendees entertained throughout the event.

Plus, there will be plenty of space to run, play and just be kids while parents connect with resources and neighbors, and kids will be able to get up close and personal with some baby goats from Skipwillow Farm (because nothing melts stress faster than baby goats).

Interactive military displays where kids and adults alike can get a closer look at equipment and history will also be on-site.

Additionally, there will be live music (Above the Fray, Crystal River Band and Bluedrive), food trucks (The Vittle Wagon, Driftwood Catering, Countryman Jamaican Grill, Food on the Go and 1218 Ventures) and a special Remembrance Ceremony at 4 p.m. honoring those lost on 9/11 and throughout the Global War on Terror.
