Parks and Rec expands programming to serve local seniors

Floyd County Parks and Recreation announced an expanded schedule of programs last week designed to help older adults stay active, build friendships, and enjoy new experiences throughout the community.

The new lineup offers activities on multiple days each week, along with day trips scheduled throughout the month. Whether participants are interested in exercise, social activities or exploring new destinations, there will be several opportunities to get involved.

Weekly Wednesday programs will take place at the former Rec Authority office (209 Fox St.), and will feature a rotating variety of activities, including games, crafts, educational opportunities and other forms of recreation. These gatherings will provide a welcoming place for seniors to socialize, enjoy coffee and light refreshments, and try something new while enjoying time with friends.

Senior fitness courses will be offered on Fridays at the Rec Park office (210 Park Drive) with instructor Amy Myers. The classes will focus on helping participants improve their strength, balance, flexibility, and overall wellness in an encouraging environment. Activities will be designed so participants can exercise at a comfortable level, regardless of their previous fitness experience.

On Mondays, seniors can attend Friendship Cafés at the Library. These informal gatherings will give participants an opportunity to enjoy conversation, recreational and educational activities, as well as enjoy hot meal in a relaxed setting.

Floyd County Parks and Recreation will also offer senior day trips throughout each month. The schedule will include a combination of affordable local outings and occasional premium trips to attractions and destinations throughout the region. Trips will provide opportunities to visit new places without the worry of driving or planning the outing independently.

The first trip, which is set for Sept. 24, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., will be to Bristol and include a stop at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, lunch at Cootie Browns (participant is responsible for lunch costs), and some time to visit the local shops. Cost is $35 per person (includes museum ticket; $11), and the registration deadline is Sept. 23. Transportation will be provided. Bus trips are limited to 13 participants. Register online at https://floydcountyparksandrec.org/active-adults or call (540) 745-9363.

Future outings will include stops in Mayberry (Mount Airy/Andy Griffith Museum/Lunch/Shopping) and the Barter Theatre (Elf the Musical/Lunch) as well as several local trips to Christiansburg and Roanoke for shopping and lunch.

“Our goal is to create consistent opportunities for Floyd County’s seniors to remain active, connected and engaged,” said Floyd County Parks and Recreation Director Jacob Agee. “We want our senior programs to offer something for everyone, whether that means attending a fitness class, spending time with friends, or joining us for a day trip.”

Participants do not have to attend every activity to be involved. Seniors are encouraged to choose the programs that best fit their interests and schedules. Most activities require advanced registration, and space is limited for fitness courses and day trips.

Program schedules, registration information and upcoming trip destinations will be available through Floyd County Parks and Recreation. For additional information, call our office at (540) 745-9363, visit www.FloydCountyParksAndRec.org or follow Floyd County Parks and Recreation on social media.
