Meet Floyd County Humane Society foster cat Heidi, who is about two years old and came to FCHS very pregnant. She was moved to a foster home and had a litter of five beautiful babies the very next day.

She has been an incredible mom — caring for her little ones, cleaning them, teaching them, and loving them. They are all happy and healthy kittens, and weaned so mama Heidi can be spayed and start her journey to find her forever home.

Heidi is loving, affectionate, and sweet. She loves to be petted and to curl up in your lap. This sweet mama is FIV positive. FIV positive cats can live long, happy lives. The virus is spread through deep puncture wounds when cats fight, keeping neutered friendly cats safe.

Key Positives:

  • Long Lifespans: Most FIV+ cats live full, normal lives without ever showing symptoms.
  • Safe Cohabitation: FIV+ cats can live safely with non-FIV+ cats, provided they are spayed/neutered and do not fight, as transmission primarily requires deep, blood-drawing puncture wounds.
  • Low Transmission Risk: The virus does not survive long in an open environment.
  • Manageable Care: With regular, annual veterinary checkups to monitor their dental and general health, they can thrive.
  • High Adoption Value: FIV+ cats are often described as exceptionally sweet and loving companions.
