Registration Open: June Bug Center adds 'Linux Explorers' to 2026 offerings

Registration is open for the spring 2026 semester of after-school offerings from The June Bug Center. A new STEAM-based class, Linux Explorers, will be offered thanks to a donation from Torc Robotics.

The following classes will be offered from January 2026 to May: 

Collaborative Storytelling (Ages 12-16)

Wednesdays or Fridays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Using Dungeons & Dragons as a guide, students explore storytelling through collaborative, improvised adventure. They’ll build a shared world, create characters with rich backstories, learn elements of geography and mapmaking, and practice performance and improvisation as they bring their characters to life.

Improv for Kids (Ages 8-12)

Fridays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

A fun, high-energy class introducing the fundamentals of improv. Students will play games, learn core improv rules, build confidence, and enjoy lots of laughs.

Computer Club (Ages 9-12)

Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Students work on their own Piper computer to explore hands-on STEAM concepts through Minecraft missions, building circuits, and learning to code with PiperCode.

Floyd JAM – Junior Appalachian Musicians (Ages 8-18)

Mondays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Students choose fiddle, guitar, or banjo and learn traditional mountain music using the JAM program model. Instruments are provided, and the semester ends with a community jam performance.

Musical Theatre for Teens (Ages 13-18)

Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Students transition into full production mode, rehearsing for a full-scale musical to be performed the first two weekends of June 2026. From auditions to bows, they’ll experience the entire production journey while continuing to refine their craft.

Beginner Ballet (Ages 7-12)

Mondays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

A lively introduction to foundational ballet technique blended with the fun and expressiveness of jazz choreography. A supportive environment for building confidence, discipline, and creativity.

Blue Ridge Strings (Ages 8-18)

Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Students learn classical music fundamentals on string instruments through hands-on instruction and creative enrichment, deepening their musical understanding and performance skills.

Drama Society (Ages 13-18)

Fridays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

A comprehensive theatre class covering acting, stagecraft, costume design, makeup, set building, and more. Perfect for teens interested in any aspect of theatre production.

Linux Explorers (Ages 10-14)

Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

A deeper dive into coding and computer systems, this new class builds off Computer Club skills and introduces students to Linux — the open-source system used widely in engineering, cybersecurity, robotics, and creative tech fields. Students will explore real tools engineers use while working through guided projects and collaborative challenges.

Lego Club (Ages 7-11)

Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Each week brings a new design challenge focused on STEAM concepts. Students develop creativity, engineering skills, and problem-solving through hands-on LEGO builds.

Robotics Club (Ages 11-16)

Using the Mindstorms EV3 curriculum, students design, build, program, and test robots through a variety of challenges. A great way to build teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.

Creative Writing (Ages 12-16)

Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Students will learn writing craft through guided exercises and develop a personal project that will be included in a collaborative zine at the end of the semester.

Acting Out (Ages 8-12)

Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

A welcoming introduction to performance fundamentals. Students learn public speaking, character building, and stage confidence, culminating in a 30-minute play at the end of the semester.
