Floyd County’s Buffaloes had a strong 2025 season that started with a six-game winning streak and included a complete shutout of Fort Chiswell, 42-0. The Buffs’ first loss wasn’t until mid-October against Carroll County, and the game ended up at a heartbreaking 49-52.

Determined to get back on top, the Buffs came back with a 28-21 win, and made it to the playoffs, which ultimately ended 55-56 in favor of Gretna.
The team ended the season with an overall standing of 8-4.

Previous Coverage by Abby Whitt

Floyd County High School’s Golf team competed for the state championship title at the Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025. The home team ultimately placed fourth on the 18-hole course with a total score of 308. Graham placed first with 297, followed by Windsor (298) and Lee (305).

Isaiah Cantrell hit par overall with a total of 71 strokes. He hit under par by one stroke (birdies) five times throughout the match, made par nine times, and hit over par by one (bogies) three times.

Peyton Mason finished the course with a score of 75, hitting one birdie, making par a total of 12 times, and hitting bogies five times.

Jonathan Whitlow’s final score was 80. He also hit one birdie and had a total of seven bogies. He made exactly par on nine of the holes.

Garrett Vest, who made par 11 times throughout the match, finished the round with a score of 82. He also hit four bogies.

Bryson Harris and Ryder Quesenberry, whose scores were not included in the team scoring for the state championship, finished the course with 87 and 101, respectively.

Harris shot par five times and made 10 bogies, and Quesenberry also shot par five times and made eight bogies.

Head coach Dirk Davis said in a Facebook post to the community that “a fourth place finish at the State Tournament was not what the team hoped for, but as a coach, my heart was overflowing. I witnessed seniors that, having played their final match, were consoling an underclassman that had a rough round. I saw and felt more hugs than a person could imagine…”

Throughout the season heading into the state run, the Buffs were nearly undefeated, claiming a total of 11 wins.

“These kids were winners long before the State Championship,” Coach Davis said. “And I was the biggest winner — I was blessed to be their coach. Through God, all things are truly possible.”

Soccer
From Coach Chris Barrett

This was the first girls soccer team at Floyd County High in many years so just getting the team going was a major accomplishment aided by Mr. Hollandsworth, Coach Cromer and Sheriff Craig.

We had 21 girls on the team, most of whom had never played soccer before. The girls had a tremendous attitude and worked really hard at practice all year. The improvement that was made was really exciting to watch.

We ended up winning two games against Martinsville and Giles. We were very competitive in all of our other games, and it turned out to be a great experience for all of us.

Freshman Ola Moeckel led us in scoring with three goals — one was the game winner versus Giles. Senior Vilah Perdue is an All-District level player for us. She scored the winning goal versus Martinsville.

We are all looking forward to future FCHS girls soccer teams.
