Sheriff Brian Craig announces retirement at end of current term; Conversations begin about successor

Floyd County Sheriff Brian Craig announced on Sunday that he will not seek re-election after his current term expires on Dec. 31, 2027, and he plans to retire. As of midday Wednesday, no one had put their name in the hat to succeed him.
One possibility is that a current sheriff’s office employee will run. Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric Branscom said Wednesday that “I think we have plenty of good candidates” within the agency.
In a brief interview Tuesday, Craig made a similar comment, saying that there are staff members at the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office suited to “to take over and do a great job.” He did not name names and said he knew of no one who had announced interest.

Craig said via a statement on Facebook on Sept. 27, "Serving as your Sheriff has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I am eternally grateful to the citizens of Floyd County for your trust and support. I am especially proud of the men and women of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. Their dedication to our community is truly commendable. I am honored to work with them each and every day."
He noted that much thought and consideration has gone into his decision to retire, and he is "fully committed to serving Floyd County and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office through the end of my term," he said.
