Town Council eyes parking lot improvements

"The wall at the parking lot took a beating,” said Town Manager Andrew Morris during the Sept. 3 Council meeting. “But do we start thinking about if we need to make (bigger) adjustments in that parking lot?"
The parking lot has a tight corner turn when entering, and an accident happened in August that took out a portion of the right entrance wall.
“I wanted to start the conversation with you guys,” Morris continued.

According to Morris, the insurance of the person responsible for the crash should take care of the damage to the wall.
“I will tell you, we have talked about paving and things before,” he said. “I would tell the Council, I think Pine Street and this parking lot are the No. 1 and No. 2 spots that need to be paved.”
Morris noted that in addition to paving the lot itself, the building on the corner of the parking lot and the fence need a few repairs, several posts, and other improvements.

Councilwoman Lisa Thompson asked Morris if he had thought about reconfiguring the parking lot due to the limited space. Morris said taking out some of the green space in the center of the parking lot and making the first few spots for compact cars is an option.
“That’s the only way you’re going to create more space up on the upper end; you’re still going to be tight there because it's nose to nose,” Councilman Chris Bower said. Bower also noted that the posts and the fence line were getting a bit worn out.
“It looks like they... went with white pine and maybe it was cost effective or it met the budget,” Bower said. “Or maybe somebody had some and wanted to donate it but not the best product for all that exposure and it's mostly rotting on the bottom.”
Bower suggested White Oak as a replacement.

Mayor Griffin suggested that Morris continue to investigate what could be done to improve the parking lot. “If you need to go out and get some bids or some estimates of what it would cost to fix, you don’t need approval for that,” Griffin said.
The project was briefly mentioned at the Sept. 17 Council meeting but official updates were provided.
The next Floyd Town Council meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at 203 E. Oxford St.
