Wall Residences named a Certified Center for Abuse Prevention and Safety
LEAP is an evidence-based curriculum that provides training about healthy relationships and abuse prevention to groups of adults and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Leadership for Empowerment and Abuse Prevention (LEAP) Project of the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University has named Wall Residences as a Certified Center for Abuse Prevention and Safety.
Four local residents, including Wall Residences staff and supported individuals, completed comprehensive coursework to become LEAP trainers. Trainers work in pairs, with each pairing including a person with disabilities, to present the interactive curriculum to small groups. These four new LEAP trainers allow Wall Residences to provide future LEAP trainings within the organization, in the Floyd community, and beyond.
LEAP is an evidence-based curriculum that provides training about healthy relationships and abuse prevention to groups of adults and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The curriculum is designed to teach participants about healthy, confusing, and unhealthy relationships; asking permission before touching; different ways to say “no;” feelings and physical signs of being comfortable or uncomfortable; and how to get help.
The training is intended not only to empower individuals with disabilities and increase safety though education, but also to positively impact the culture of organizations and communities.
Wall Residences intends to expand LEAP training beyond the company’s southwestern Virginia region in 2026. Learn more about the employee-owned company at www.wallresidences.com.
