Alleged shooter captured in North Carolina

Puckett, who is suspected of fatally shooting one Carroll County deputy and wounding another during a welfare check on Fancy Gap Highway in Hillsville Friday night, eluded authorities for almost 48 hours before he was taken into custody.

Law enforcement officials in Surry County, North Carolina, apprehended Michael Puckett of Cana on Sunday.

Puckett, who is suspected of fatally shooting one Carroll County deputy and wounding another during a welfare check on Fancy Gap Highway in Hillsville Friday night, eluded authorities for almost 48 hours before he was taken into custody.

Virginia State Police, the state FBI, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), U.S. Marshalls, and many other organizations and individuals had a hand in finding the wanted man. NCSBI said in a statement Sunday night that Puckett was armed with a handgun when he was arrested peacefully at about 8:30 p.m. on May 31. He was transferred to Surry County Detention Center to await his hearing.
