Board OKs new position for Parks and Rec

After a closed session during the Floyd County Board of Supervisors meeting last week, the Board voted to add a new full-time position to Floyd County Parks and Recreation (FCPR).
FCPR currently has two full-time employees (Director Jacob Agee and Assistant Director Christian Whitt) and one part-time position, which is becoming full-time with benefits following the vote.
The Board voted 4-1 with Supervisor Linda DeVito Kuchenbuch (Little River) voting against the funding. The motion authorized County Administration to “move the appropriate amount of funds” from contingency to FCPR, which County Administrator Kim Chiddo noted, “does not change the bottom line.”

“We envision this position getting us one step closer to offering a full line of recreational programming for the entire community,” Agee said. “I have felt for a long time that we have had holes in our programming inventory — many of those "holes" will be filled with this position.”
Agee said the plan is to have “Weekly Wednesday” for local seniors which will include a “rotating inventory” of activities, such as crafting, bingo, potlucks, presentations, and historical programs. “We will also partner with Friendship Cafe for a weekly meal for free, and to create monthly or bi-monthly senior trips to surrounding areas, and create a senior fitness course.”
Other duties of the future employee will revolve around creating more youth programming (day trips, summer camps, clubs, etc) and growing the department’s special community events.
Agee said another way that adding this new position to FCPR is that it will allow him to pursue unique programming that is not traditionally offered by parks and recreation. For example, he explained that he would like to revive the part of the Appalachian Trail that ran through Floyd until the mid-1900s.
“Much of the Old Appalachian Trail (OAT) was routed over secondary roads, all of which are still passable today,” Agee said. “I hope to one day turn the OAT into a scenic byway and use it to create recreational and educational programming.”
He also noted that he would like to create programs that revolve around taking care of turfgrass/lawn maintenance.
Chairman Joe Turman (Burks Fork) said at the July 13 meeting, “I’ve got faith in him [Agee]. I think it’s going to be good.”
