Longtime Floyd County High School cornerstone Barry Hollandsworth is set to retire June 30 after almost 20 years of service developing minds that will shape the country’s future as a Floyd County leader. The school district announced earlier this month that Travis Cantrell, who is also a longtime fixture throughout Floyd County Public Schools (FCPS), will take on the duties of FCHS principal.
Hollandsworth started teaching in 1988 and has been a principal for a total of 18 years. His career in education has spanned more than 30 years. He said the first administrative position was as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) director from 1999-2004, and he became principal for “the first go-around” from 2004-2011. His second appointment as principal started in 2015 and will end with his June 30 retirement.

Hollandsworth said his plans for the next chapter of life include spending time with his seven grandchildren, playing golf, and completing the Honey Do List from his wife Susan. He noted that the two of them recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary.
Travis Cantrell, whose family legacy is built on community service and has had a profound impact on thousands of students, will start his 20th year with FCPS. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Cantrell said he is looking forward to being back in the halls of FCHS.
“I have always enjoyed working with students to find out what their passions, strengths, and interests are and then help them take those interests and develop a future plan that works for them,” he explained.

Cantrell started off teaching and eventually became the district’s Athletic Director, holding both positions while continuing to coach. He then served as Assistant Principal at the high school for seven years before taking on the role of Director of Secondary Instruction this school year.
“I enjoy developing and maintaining positive relationships with students and staff within the building and being a small part of students' effort to chase their dreams,” he said. “We are all going to work as hard as we can to make sure each student has the opportunity to be successful… I know our staff feels the same way and our ultimate goal is that students leave Floyd County High School with the confidence to attack their future knowing we prepared them to accomplish their goals.”
