Floyd Town Hall and the Floyd Visitors Center is located at 203 E. Oxford St. Town Council meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

Last week’s Floyd Town Council meeting included a brief update on the DonnKenny project after a staffing change on the Virginia Tech team of designers delayed some final approvals by Council at the beginning of August.

Town Manager Andrew Morris said that he had talked with Trent Cox about drawing up conceptual plans to use for seeking requests for proposals in regard to the public works building, which will be situated at the back of the Warren G. Lineberry Park property.

Morris said Cox estimated a cost of about $125 per hour or about $2,500 total, “worst case scenario.” He said he also spoke with Floyd County Building Official Mark Bolt, who will ultimately approve the final plans from the bidders on the RFP.

Council unanimously approved Morris to move forward with working with Cox on the conceptual plans.

During his Town Manager’s Report, Morris shared with Council that Town Clerk Lynn Gregory won the only scholarship in the state to attend a conference about updated record keeping practices in Virginia Beach in October.

Councilman Bruce Turner asked Morris if there have been any updates about the DonnKenny building, and Morris said he’s working on a Department of Environmental Quality grant, which is due in October, that’s related to clean up and can apply to that property.

Morris said Town officials might not hear much about it until closer to the new year, “if not in January.”

Turner also asked if the group working on the DonnKenny project at Virginia Tech had been in touch, and Morris said he had touched base recently.

“I’m not sure what staff member it was that went out, but apparently it was a pretty hefty position for them to try to fill,” Morris said. “I would like to have some of those final design concepts for my grant submittal…” but they seem to be struggling, he said. “I think they’re trying to figure out what that’s going to look like for their team.”
