Town Council approves resolution for special election
“The code is that the Town is required to petition the court for a writ of election and this is saying that you pass a resolution tonight,” Town Attorney Murrell explained at the meeting. “The writ of election is what the judge signs off on to say that a special election can be held...'
The Floyd Town Council met on Thursday, Feb. 19, and unanimously voted in favor of the resolution for a special election for councilwoman Lisa Thompson.
Town Attorney Janet Murrell and Town Manager Andrew Morris presented the details of the resolution during the meeting.
“We have been working on a resolution for the special election for councilwoman Thompson,” Morris said in the meeting. “It requires a resolution for us to initiate the election piece.”
The petition says that Paul LeMay resigned his seat with an effective date of Jan. 1.

“The code is that the Town is required to petition the court for a writ of election and this is saying that you pass a resolution tonight,” Murrell explained at the meeting. “The writ of election is what the judge signs off on to say that a special election can be held at the next general election.”
The next general election will be Nov. 3.
The council passed the resolution with a unanimous vote. Murrell will take and submit the documents to the court.
Mayor Griffin noted after Town Manager’s report that the council would need to respond to the county soon regarding the new charter proposed for the operation of the Floyd-Floyd County Public Service Authority (PSA).
The charter that the county is proposing would last four years. The council initially suggested a 10-year charter period to show officials' commitment to PSA staff and community members.
“We have a $1 million budget and the county’s is $50 million, so there’s no way we can match them dollar for dollar,” Mayor Griffin noted during the meeting.
The council would need to discuss during the next meeting the next steps to respond to the county prior to the current charter ending mid-April, according to Mayor Griffin.
