Floyd man pursues mission of giving

“The message I want to share is that giving back to others is a special, rewarding feeling for the soul and heart, and you never know how greatly it’ll impact somebody’s life,” Ryan Scott said. “For me, giving is better than receiving, and I look forward to it.”

Ryan Scott is a Floyd native whose mission is to spread joy throughout the community and find ways to give back as much as he can.

Scott first started his community outreach a couple years back, he said, after coming up with the idea of doing “food conversations” with friends and strangers during which he would buy them a meal and ask them “a series of questions to get to know more about them.”

Many of these meals were bought at local restaurants, including Geraldi’s and Dogtown, Scott said. He’s purchased 31 meals for "food conversations" overall and says he hopes to reach more than 100 eventually.

Scott has also purchased smaller treats, such as candy bars, drinks, and ice cream. He was inspired by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who did something similar in Hawaii, to buy more than 300 candy bars (Reese’s, Hershey’s, and Snickers) in regular and king sizes for Floyd Xpress Mart to give away to kids.

Scott said the Floyd community has often supported his efforts by giving him money that he uses for others and that the town has always been “so kind” to him.

“I try my best to make sure I have enough money for my fellow brothers and sisters,” he said. “Jesus gave me the purpose of giving…”

Scott said that while there are people in his life that warn him about possibly being taken advantage of, he feels he is “rich in life.”

“I have the absolute best family and friends I could ever have…” he said, adding that he gives so much “because why not?... I try to be a good-hearted soul.”

He added, “And if you thought me giving back was something, you haven’t seen anything yet — just wait until next year!”
