Floyd students earn national Speaking and Service Awards

The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) announced the student winners of the national Speaking and Service Award this week. Five Floyd County High School students were among those recognized.
The NSDA Honor Society recognizes students for participation in speech and debate activities. Students earn service points and levels of distinction through participation in speech and debate competitions, community service, leadership activities, public speaking, and more.
Winners of the 2024-2025 Speaking and Service Award earned 200 service points in the Honor Society last year, the maximum number possible per year.

“This elite group of student leaders go above and beyond to support their teams, schools, and communities,” said J. Scott Wunn, Executive Director of NSDA. “They are using their voices to inspire the world around them and will be future leaders in our country.”

Theda McCutchan, coach of the FCHS Speech team, said she is “incredibly proud of these students and of every member of the Speech team.”
“Not only do they put an admirable amount of effort into perfecting their competition pieces and getting ready for tournaments, but they also give a lot of their time to the community, through service, public speaking, and performances,” McCutchan said. “I have no doubt that we'll have some recipients of this award again next year — and hopefully we'll have some tournament accolades as well.”
