Floyd's Juneteenth event celebrates freedom and resilience this weekend

Floyd CARE (Community Action for Racial Equity) invites community members from across the New River Valley and beyond to its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, at Warren G. Lineberry Park.
The event will bring together residents, families, educators, artists, and community leaders for a day of remembrance, education, culture, and unity honoring the significance of Juneteenth in American history. Jerome Claytor and Touch of Class is returning as the featured band for the event, which will take place from 4-7 p.m.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth stands as a celebration of freedom, resilience, achievement, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.

The Floyd CARE Juneteenth Celebration will provide an opportunity for community members to reflect on this important history while enjoying music, educational programming, cultural presentations, and family-friendly activities. Organizers hope the event will foster meaningful conversations, strengthen community connections, and create a welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can gather in the spirit of learning and celebration.
“Juneteenth is an opportunity to honor the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us while reaffirming our commitment to building an inclusive and equitable community,” said a representative of Floyd CARE. “We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate freedom, culture, and the rich contributions of African Americans to our nation and our local communities.”
