The question of when Floyd's newest restaurant will open can finally be answered: Gather will be open with limited kitchen hours on Saturday, July 11, and for brunch on Sunday, July 12.

Owners of Gather and Big Indian Bakery, Adrienne Davis and Earl White said that they are "starting to feel really good about" opening Gather to the public. White said he just wants to hit the ground, "well, you know, sprinting."

"We've had the menu for a while," said Davis, “and it constantly changes because we want to do everything. So we have a set...somewhat of a set menu. But then every time we look at it, we're like, oh God, we could do something way more exciting than that particular dish.”

Gather hosted their first two private events in late June, one of which was the Floyd Times' GiveLocalNRV Power Hour event, which White said, “went great.” Then on Friday, June 26, the team put together a special event for a retiring member of the Citizens Telephone Cooperative team, which drew 75 people into the new space. White said that one "went really well also, and so we're feeling more confident.”

White explained that most of the employees of Gather are also employees of Big Indian Bakery, and the transition/training has been easy. “I think a lot of them are pretty acclimated… You've got to be a Jack or a Jill of all trades," he said. "Everyone's going to know every piece of it. We definitely want to foster a team culture here. We want to foster an environment where everyone feels equally important and equally compensated for what they're doing, and that we all have as much vested interest in the final outcome of the product going out.”

If you have been waiting for Gather’s soft opening, featuring locally grown food and full-of-flavor dishes, your opportunity is coming this weekend.

On Saturday, July 11, there will be a limited menu for the public to enjoy from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. The kitchen will be closed from 2-5 p.m., but drinks and pastries will still be available. White and Davis said, "For breakfast, we will have a full pastry case and the bread rack filled. Also available will be a variety of breakfast/brunch plates, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee bar... After 5 p.m., we will have small plates and a few entrees."

Then, Gather will be open for brunch from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.

Davis and White said the "menu is crafted using seasonal local produce, responsibly sourced meats, and a sensitivity to a variety of diet needs... Lunch and (future) dinner will definitely revolve around what's in season, what we get a lot of from local farmers.”

The grand opening of Gather will be on July 22. "We are so excited to welcome everyone into our new space and to settle into a new rhythm," the owners said.

David and White also noted that Big Indian Bakery will no longer be available at the Floyd Farmers Market, Eco Village Farm Store, or River Stone Farm Store, but will still continue to be offerings at Harvest Moon and Slaughter’s Supermarket.

Davis and White said, "It is bittersweet but it is time to move on from the Floyd Market to our new venture, Gather Restaurant."

Big Indian Bakery started at the Floyd Farmers Market in 2016, and the continued support by the community since "has been so encouraging, it is such a joy to see everyone each Saturday throughout the entire year, in rain, freezing cold, and the heat of summer, enjoying the bread and pastries we make and supporting all of Floyd's local producers. It is a labor of love setting up a craft bakery store each Saturday, and we have indeed loved every minute of it.

"As we move on, you will continue to be able to find all your Big Indian Farm favorite breads and pastries in our retail section of Gather, in addition you can sit down and enjoy a meal, cup of coffee or espresso, or a craft cocktail."

Gather is located at 227 N. Locust St., above Harvest Moon.
