Floyd County High School’s Golf team competed for the state championship title at the Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock on Tuesday, Oct. 14. 

The home team ultimately placed fourth on the 18-hole course with a total score of 308. Graham placed first with 297, followed by Windsor (298) and Lee (305).

Isaiah Cantrell hit par overall with a total of 71 strokes. He hit under par by one stroke (birdies) five times throughout the match, made par nine times, and hit over par by one (bogies) three times.  

Peyton Mason finished the course with a score of 75, hitting one birdie, making par a total of 12 times, and hitting bogies five times. 

Jonathan Whitlow’s final score was 80. He also hit one birdie and had a total of seven bogies. He made exactly par on nine of the holes. 

Garrett Vest, who made par 11 times throughout the match, finished the round with a score of 82. He also hit four bogies.

Bryson Harris and Ryder Quesenberry, whose scores were not included in the team scoring for the state championship, finished the course with 87 and 101, respectively. 

Harris shot par five times and made 10 bogies, and Quesenberry also shot par five times and made eight bogies. 

Head coach Dirk Davis said in a Facebook post to the community on Wednesday that “a fourth place finish at the State Tournament was not what the team hoped for, but as a coach, my heart was overflowing. I witnessed seniors that, having played their final match, were consoling an underclassman that had a rough round. I saw and felt more hugs than a person could imagine…”

Season recap

The Buffaloes’ regular season started Aug. 4 at the Olde Mill Golf Course, and they finished well ahead of their competitors. As a team, the six boys scored 307, and individually Peyton Mason finished with 73, Isaiah Cantrell with 77, Jonathan Whitlow with 78, Bryson Harris with 79, Ryder Quesenberry with 80, and Garrett Vest with 85. 

Carroll County was the closest team behind them with a total score of 325. 

On Aug. 5 at Martinsville's Forest Park Country Club, the Buffs came in with a score of 295, and Jaycee Williams joined the six-person team whose scores were used for the final tallies. The next closest team was Radford, and they scored 321. 

Mason hit 68, Cantrell hit 72, Whitlow hit 76, Quesenberry hit 79, Harris hit 81, and Williams hit 96. Vest and Madelyn Hall also played the round and scored 83 and 84, respectively. 

At their home match at Great Oaks on Aug. 11, the Floyd team placed first among competitors for the third consecutive match of the season with an overall score of 304. This time, Hall joined the first team.

Cantrell finished the course with a score of 69, followed by Mason with 72, Whitlow with 75, Quesenberry and Harris both with 88, and Hall with 95. Garret shot 85, and Williams shot 95 that round. 

Radford, again, took second place with a total of 329. 

The Buffaloes finished more than 30 strokes ahead of second place during the Aug. 14 match at Botetourt Golf Club with a first team overall score of 285. Carroll County came in second place with 317. Mason finished with 65, followed by Cantrell with 68, Vest and Whitlow both with 76, Quesenberry with 78, and Hall with 87. Harris scored 75. 

On Aug. 18, Floyd faced Marion and Lee County at Holston Hills, and the Buffs continued their winning streak by one stroke. Their overall team score was 298, and Lee County’s was 299. Individual scores put Whitlow on top with 69, then Cantrell with 73, Mason with 77, Quesenberry with 79, Harris with 82, and Vest with 86. 

The Buffs’ winning streak continued throughout the season: 

  • In Radford on Aug. 25: Individual scores: Cantrell (67), Mason and Whitlow (74), Harris (77),  Quesenberry (80), Hall (92); team total: 292
  • In Genvar on Aug. 27: Individual scores: Mason (71), Cantrell (72), Whitlow (75), Quesenberry (80), Harris (83), Hall (83); team total 298. Vest (86)
  • In Blacksburg on Sept. 2: Individual scores: Whitlow (68), Cantrell (71), Mason (73), Quesenberry (76), Harris (78), Vest (77); team score: 288
  • In Carroll County on Sept. 3: Cantrell (69), Whitlow (74), Mason (76), Quesenberry (79), Harris (86), Vest (91); team score: 298

The Floyd team placed second by five strokes at the Great Oaks match on Sept. 16. Overall, the team scored 298, while Blacksburg scored 293. Mason hit 72, Cantrell and Whitlow both hit 73, Quesenberry and Vesst both hit 80, and Hall hit 88. Harris scored 83. 

At Great Oaks on Sept. 25, the Buffs resumed their winning streak, scoring 297 against Auburn's 313. Whitlow scored 71, Cantrell and Mason both hit 75, Harris hit 76, Hall hit 78, and Quesenberry hit 79. Vest scored 84, and Williams scored 90. 

The sub-regional match on Sept. 29, which also took place at Great Oaks in Riner, saw the Floyd team score 288 and Radford coming in second place with 319. Mason scored 68, Cantrell scored 71, Whitlow scored 72, Vest scored 77, Quesenberry scored 78, and Harris scored 81. 

In the Regional Tournament on Oct. 6 at Falling River, the Buffaloes hit an even 300, claiming their 11th win of the 2025 season. Whitlow hit 72, Cantrell and Mason hit 73, Harris hit 82, Quesenberry hit 85, and Hall hit 88.
