June Bug Center launches $25K campaign to mark 25 years
After 25 years of hard work by volunteers, JBC hosts 14-19 after school programs each semester, and between eight and 21 summer camps. A total of 420 local children were enrolled in JBC programs in 2024.
The June Bug Center (JBC) is celebrating its 25th year of serving the Floyd community with a fundraising campaign to raise $25,000.
Born in 2001 from the legacy of June McBroom, the JBC diligently serves Floyd County youngsters through extracurricular activities that focus on performing arts and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) fields, including community theatre, computer science, and traditional old-time music.
JBC Executive Director Joanne Woodward said this week, “June was a loving and giving woman who had a passion for the arts and education, for Floyd County and its community. She felt that the children were at a disadvantage due to the lack of after school enrichment programs, and the absence of funds to access these opportunities.”
Now, after 25 years of hard work by volunteers, JBC hosts 14-19 after school programs each semester, and between eight and 21 summer camps. A total of 420 local children were enrolled in JBC programs in 2024.
The #25Kfor25Years campaign is a way to celebrate the Center’s history and achievements while also ensuring its offerings are funded and accessible for the next generation of students. Money raised will help cover day-to-day operations, which includes funds to support instructors, upgrades to facilities/equipment, and student scholarships, making a long-lasting impact.

“While the structure has grown, the heart of the organization hasn’t changed. We’re still focused on community, access, and performing arts and music education,” Woodward said. She added, “I want people to know that the June Bug Center is here for everyone. We work hard to keep programs affordable and offer scholarships so cost is never a barrier. Beyond performing arts and music education, the JBC provides a safe, creative space for young people after school and helps preserve the cultural traditions that make this community unique.”
As a part of the year of celebration, Woodward said JBC will be co-sponsoring a Floyd Community Talent Show alongside the Floyd Chamber at Dogtown Roadhouse in June.
JBC’s spring 2026 semester begins Jan. 26, and registration is still open at www.junebugcenter.com. Transportation for after school programs is provided by Floyd County Public Schools five days on weekdays during each semester. Snacks are provided by Feeding SouthWest Virginia. JBC is located at 221 Parkway Lane S.
