Christy and Brian Corbett, owners of Crooked Mountain, are preparing the farm for their busiest time of year.

Brian said that he likes to describe the land as an “agritourism destination,” but offers clarification that Crooked Mountain is much more than that. The Corbetts explained that it is a festival site, event center with a farm store, campground, and an incredible u-pick flower spot.

Crooked Mountain's Farm Store is loaded with local art, souvenirs, camping essentials, ice, and firewood — “things you might have forgot when you're on your travels.” Christy is excited that they were able to add a tourism section this year “with maps to try and get people going where they need to go." Brian noted that most of the visitors are people traveling along the parkway.

The Corbetts' U-Pick Flower Farm has been a dreamscape for local photographers for a couple of years now. Plus, cars driving by are able to admire what looks like endless rows of sunflowers blooming. “When we bought this place, neither of us had a background in farming, so we've been learning as we go along.” Christy said attended Virginia Western “and took some classes in horticulture that did give me the basics, but most of it is just trial and error.” Brian points out that this year they are going to “put together some pre-made bouquets, so people can stop by if they don't have time to u-pick and pick up a pre-made bouquet.”

Christy said that she “always looks forward to the sunflowers," because there are multiple varieties, there'll be different colors and shapes available. "We also have zinnias, echinacea, black-eyed Susans, snapdragons, celosia, calendula, sage, and lavender."

Last year, the Corbetts partnered with an official photographer for their date nights and also for Pickin’ Fest, a one day event with flower picking and music to enjoy.

For those who have been fortunate enough to have driven by the farm during full bloom, but left with a feeling of envy of the textured wall of different colored sunflowers, you are in luck. At the end of the U-Pick season last year, Christy and Brian sat out on the porch and harvested all the sunflowers seeds to sell. “We started selling our own Crooked Mountain mix sunflower seeds, which is available in the farm store by the ounce and quarter-pound. We call it the Crooked Mountain Mix because it's not just strict black oil sunflower seeds — it's not just autumn beauty or any certain type. It's just a mix of everything.”

Crooked Mountain is a small, veteran-owned working farm located at 1378 Shooting Creek Rd. SE.
