Local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrates milestone anniversary this year
DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America.
The following article comes from the June 2026 edition of The Floyd Intelligencer, the newsletter of the Floyd Historical Society. It was submitted by Lynn Reed, Regent of the Floyd Court House Chapter of NSDAR.
The Floyd Court House Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) celebrates its 95th Anniversary in 2026. The chapter was organized on Dec. 23, 1931, and named in honor of the County and Governor John B. Floyd. Anne Simmons Proffit was the Organizing Regent and gave her full support to the Chapter activities until her death in 1974.
DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join.
The chapter currently has 37 members and four associate members representing 69 approved patriots that served in the militia, provided patriotic service, civil service, or purchased supplies.
The DAR’s President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage has chosen as her theme, “Illuminate Our Legacy.” During the chapter’s 95th Anniversary in 2026 and Virginia’s Semiquincentennial celebration through 2033, the theme will place emphasis on our patriots and the families that supported them.
