Rooted in Recovery Floyd Peer Center opened on 211 Fox St. earlier this month. The space is managed by New River Valley Community Services and supported by Floyd County and the NRV Recovery Ecosystem.

Dedicated to promoting recovery and reducing the stigma that surrounds substance use disorders and mental health issues within the community, the Center offers a safe, judgment-free place for individuals who are struggling.

Interim County Administrator Kim Chiddo said the Center, which officially opened to serve the public on Aug. 4, “offers a safe place without judgement to assist with resources and tools for individuals/family for progress and growth.”

“Research has shown that peer recovery centers reduce relapse rates, by offering hope, resources and a community that help turn lives around,” Chiddo said. “The centers are not magnets for drug use – contrary, they are magnets for recovery. Having Certified Peer Recovery Specialists promotes the positive change that can happen with shared experience and hope.”

Two Certified Peet Recovery Specialists are working at the Floyd Center: Kayla Shelton and Jesia Gomez. They also gave a presentation to the Board of Supervisors in July, before the Center officially opened.

Chiddo said that Rooted in Recovery affords individuals the opportunity to “thrive together” through not only fostering a safe environment but also through togetherness, offering resources, workshops, groups, one-on-one support and more.

“Safe spaces in recovery allow a person’s mind and heart to heal without the need or pressure of defense or fear.” Chiddo added. “Having this space can impact an individual offering a freedom from judgement, validation of feelings, trust and vulnerability, reduction of stress and anxiety, a space for self-acceptance and encouragement to express emotions, just to name a few.”
