Bert Mizusawa (Senate)

Bert Mizusawa is a retired Major General of the U.S. Army whose career in public service has spanned more than four decades in both military and civilian capacities. He is a graduate of West Point, and earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. He served as a deputy under the Secretary of the Army from 1998-2001 before becoming a Major General, and he co-authored the Quadrennial Defense Review legislation, a cornerstone of U.S. defense planning, while working with the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Since retiring from government service, Mizusawa has founded and led private enterprises, including a federal contracting firm and a law practice, his website states.

The stances mentioned on Mizusawa’s website include Fiscal Responsibility (bringing excessive spending under control), Affordability (supporting a simpler tax code with fewer brackets and larger deductions), Defending Our Military (being a pro-military Senator), the Second Amendment (defending the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms), Immigration (keeping borders secure while making the immigration process easier), and Energy (supporting nuclear power).

Kim Farington (Senate)

Kim Farington, the founder and CEO of KTech, has been a public servant for 33 years and previously served as the former Chief Financial Officer of the First Responder Network Authority, where she managed a $100 billion budget. She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Telecommunications Network Specialist. She lives in  Fairfax Station with her husband.

Farington’s campaign website states that “she is a pro-freedom, pro-growth, pro-national defense, pro-veterans, pro-secure borders, pro-Second Amendment, pro-affordability candidate for U.S. Senate and committed to President Trump’s America-First agenda.”

A number of Farington’s positions are shared online, including those revolving around Foreign Policy (advocates for an America-first approach), Energy (supports oil, gas, coal, and nuclear expansion), Education (supports School Choice and parental rights), and more, as are her top three priorities: “1. To expose and eliminate inefficiencies, waste, and fraud in government spending, and reduce the national debt; 2. Make certain Congress passes no laws that impede our Second Amendment Rights; 3. Born in New Jersey and raised in California, Williams enlisted in the U.S. Navy and deployed twice as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He later joined the CIA as a case officer and continues his service in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Joy A. Powers (House of Representatives)

Joy Powers has organized campaign priorities into her H.O.M.E. Plan, which focuses on Healthcare, Opportunity, Market Affordability, and Education “built from real conversations in church basements, on front porches, and around kitchen tables.” The HOME Plan lays out Powers’ support for improving rural healthcare and supporting agriculture, addiction recovery, jobs and industry, infrastructure and broadband, affordable living, food security, education and training, childcare and the workforce, and veterans and service members.

Other issues discussed on her website include data centers, inflation, corporate power, rural representation and more. “Southwest Virginia deserves a leader who will fight — not for political points, but for practical solutions,” Powers says on her website. “This is not personal. It is about results. I think the Ninth deserves a representative who measures success by whether life here is actually getting better.”

Powers lives and works on her family’s cattle farm in Bedford. She has served the community for years through her roles as superintendent of the Bedford County Fair, founder of Restore the Harvest, foster care advocate, and more.

Adam Grayson Murphy (House of Representatives)

Adam Murphy has been campaigning for the House nomination for about a year, and some of the issues discussed on his campaign website includes rural healthcare (hospitals closing and “maternity deserts”), inflation (rising costs of living and stagnant wages), economic exploitation, data centers, and decaying infrastructure.

Originally from Illinois, Murphy graduated from Western Governor’s University in 2017 and works in software development. His campaign platform is dubbed the “21st Century New Deal,” which culminates in passing the 21st Century Bill of Rights “ — new, modern amendments to the US Constitution to protect the rights of us all as we move further into the future,” according to his website.

“To win here in District 9, we must connect directly with the people and that means everyday people who live their lives here in Appalachia, and so who better to advise and help connect us than people who are stepping up to make a real difference for their communities,” Murphy said.

Murphy lives in the Roanoke area with his wife.

Douglas E. Crockett (House of Representatives)

Raised in Ivanhoe, Douglas Crockett attended Emory and Henry and entered seminary to become a pastor, working in east Tennessee and southwest Virginia. His campaign largely depends on his faith and divine callings, and he and his wife currently live in Wytheville.

Crockett’s “Prosperity Platform: For American Unity, Maturity, and Prosperity” ties together many of the other stances he highlights on his website (Affordability; Jobs, the Economy, and Data Centers; Local Opportunities for Living the Dream; Public Safety; and America’s Brand). In the Prosperity Platform, Crockett acknowledges the history of the Ninth District and its contributions to the country. It encourages unity between “the Right” and “the Left,” identifying the problem as the division that currently exists.

“It is time for America to give back to the region with an infusion of money to build up our health care system, provide jobs, build infrastructure, promote education, eliminate illegal drug use, and provide broadband access throughout the region,” Crockett said. “This is the Backbone of America Recovery Act that I will introduce in Congress as a member of the House of Representatives.”
