Town Council taps Thompson for interim vacancy
Thompson is the first female on town council since 2018, according to Town records provided by Clerk Lynn Gregory. The last female council member was Karen Bingham, who served an eight-year term. Prior to Bingham, Rebecca Harman served on council from 1997 to 1998 as Vice Mayor.
The Floyd Town Council unanimously appointed Lisa Thompson on Thursday to fill a vacancy on council after Paul LeMay resigned in mid-December 2025.
Thompson was one of two applicants that were interviewed by the council shortly after LeMay’s resignation. The council also interviewed former councilman David Whitaker. According to Mayor Will Griffith, only one round of interviews was held, but it was clear who the council was leaning toward after that round.

“Lisa’s attitude and approach to working as a team made our decision easier,” said Mayor Griffith. “We felt we found a match the majority of our citizens would be supportive of.”
Thompson ran for council in November 2025, however the two positions available were retained by Chris Bond and Bruce Turner.
Vice Mayor Chris Bond said, “I just appreciated the fact that she [Thompson] showed the interest to run and had a good showing, so that made it an easy choice for me.”
Councilman Bruce Turner followed up with, “I feel like we’ve done the right thing by appointing her because like we said, she did run.”

As a council-appointed councilwoman, Thompson will serve as an interim member of Town Council until the next general election, where there will be two open seats on the 2027 ballot.
“I am excited. With her connections to the library and some other civic groups, I think she would be a good person for the community,” Councilman Chris Bower commented.

More about Thompson
Thompson has lived in Floyd with her family since 2011. She is currently the Assistant Branch Manager at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library in Floyd.
In a questionnaire with Floyd Times from September 2025, Thompson said, “I have never experienced anything like this community. I see people actively trying to help either their neighbors or people they don’t know. Floyd is unlike anywhere that I have ever lived. It is not something that goes unnoticed by our citizens and visitors.”
Thompson was not present when the council unanimously appointed her, but Mayor Griffin said Thompson was traveling and emphasized she will be at the next meeting.
“I would like to see Floyd continue to grow as the community that it is while embracing that idea even more fully. Floyd is wonderful,” Thompson said in her questionnaire. “ I see opportunities for partnerships and growth so that more people in our community can thrive.”
The next council meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 5:30 p.m. at Floyd Town Hall, 203 E Oxford St.
